What word would you use to describe a person in a home video or a reality show?

They're not "acting," they're not "performing," (are they?) so what are they doing?

Hi there,

I'd say they are victims.

Victims of vanity, of the media, of the majority's lust and greed for "reality"...

they are poor people, and I pity them, even though they would probably use the verb "to star" (if that was what you were looking for)

Hope you'll never become one of them!

Lots of love

Anna

Mkay mr cyber tootie...Some may be performing in home videos as they're doing home videos - may be to win something or have a pet perform a trick, or they're blowing something up? who knows...

um..for a reality show they're entertaining basically. Yes, (well most) are not acting, and technically not performing some kind of act..so they're just people entertaining for money, for themselves, and for the viewers.

Just my take.
Characters - There is now performative element (acting)necessary to be classified as a character
I believe a reality show may have varying terms depending on the type of reality show:

houseguests

castmates

contestants

not sure about home video
